Resonance Rhythm in You - A Musical Progression Three Years in the Making
In early 2020, I started working on a small side project hastily named 'Project Dawn' in Unity - with no real consideration for the title or what the game would eventually become. The project was based around some earlier prototype ideas I'd made for a rhythmic battle system - something easily enough designed and coded on my own (I'm certainly no programmer). Having just had my contract end in the midst of Covid, I didn't really have anything else to do at the time, but I knew the path ahead of me would always end in independent development, so I took the first steps forward.
Resonance Games was registered with the BC government (Canada) in May, and while I didn't yet know exactly where things were going, I knew I needed to get things started. Shortly thereafter, a fully playable Alpha Prototype and our first concept art was released, and both the positive reception + support from friends and fellow game devs was enough to let me know I was on the right path.
Roughly two years later (2021-2023) and Resonance Games now has 10+ active developers working on the project in their spare time, maintains consistent and regular weekly + monthly team meetings, has both business development and marketing/community coaches and has even convinced me of leaving my job to pursue this indie dream. It's wild how far we've come as a team, and I can honestly say that none of it would be possible without the hard work of each person who has ever touched the project over the past two years. From our artists' incredible work to our programmers' diligent code building as well as the absolutely inspiring audio and music that has gone into the game; Rhythm in You has developed into a project I can already say I'm deeply proud of.
And today marks another first step, as we finally commit to a build (any delays on that front fall solidly on myself!) and release our first demo on itch! We've put in a lot of work to get to this place, largely in part, but not limited to, developing and implementing the progression systems to allow actual narrative flow throughout the game, as well as a flurry of quality of life fixes and bug squashing.
This is the first build which highlights our Vertical Slice: the first short chapter of the game. And while not everything is complete/polished, I think it's a clear reflection of what you can expect from the finished game both in terms of tone and gameplay. We still have many systems and ideas we want to implement, but for now, you can get a taste for Rhythm in You's story, and experience our unique battle system first hand.
This is just the first public build of many and I can earnestly say from each and every Resonance team member: thank you for taking the time to read this and play the game. We can't wait to to hear your feedback while we continue this journey alongside you all...
